Historical Markers
The Lafourche Heritage Society periodically erects and dedicates roadside markers denoting historically significant locations throughout Lafourche Parish. These markers are intended to promote and highlight places and events important to the cultural heritage of our region. Some historical markers are co-sponsored by generous grants from community organizations.
To suggest a location for a historical marker, email the location and description of its historical significance to Clifton Theriot at clifton.theriot@nicholls.edu. Nominations can also include photographs of the location.
Dedication of the
St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church
historical marker was held on Saturday, February 24, 2024.
TEXT of HISTORICAL MARKER reads:
ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST CATHOLIC CHURCH
In 1876, Père Menard constructed a small building on donated land called “École St. Jean” (St. John School), which served as a school administered by the Sisters of Mt. Carmel and as a chapel for Mass. On June 14, 1919, the church parish was formally established. In 1922, the congregation built a bridge to accommodate parishioners on the east side of the bayou. In 1930, the present church was constructed featuring a vaulted, stained-wood ceiling. In 1940, the school was closed. In 1955, the church was enlarged to accommodate a growing congregation by splitting the building in the middle, moving the sanctuary, and adding a new section to allow for more seating.
Dedication of the Thibodaux College plaque on May 2, 2019, sponsored by the Boys of TC and Lafourche Heritage Society that also honors the Brothers of Sacred Heart who loved them and taught them treasured values.
